Puçol Acoge. Traditional culture and local heritage as tools for integration and coexistence

From November 11, 2022 to January 15, 2023   Puçol School Museum The educational and museum project developed in the district of Puçol, in Elche, is the result of a community initiative that needed everyone's encouragement in order to be, precisely, what it has become: a unique educational and museum experience emerged in the countryside of Elche, whose objective is to recover and value the heritage of Elche and its surroundings. Following in the footsteps of the work that the Puçol School Museum has been developing since its creation, Pusol Acoge is established as a sociocultural integration project for migrant citizens, the first that the museum has developed with a foreign community. Elche Acoge Foundation Elche Acoge is an entity dedicated to the reception, care and promotion of migrants and refugees in vulnerable situations, and to the promotion of lines of action that allow the development of a climate of respect and tolerance between the migrant population and the host community . The foundation puts at the service of migrants the necessary tools to facilitate their integration into the host population -with the purpose of rebuilding their vital project-, for which the receptivity of Elche's society is essential. In this aspect, projects such as Pusol Acoge stand out, which have allowed, through an original proposal, a common space for cultural exchange. Pusol Acoge This community and participatory initiative is distinguished by making use of local heritage to promote social cohesion and integration and, ultimately, respectful and sustainable coexistence between peoples. Because the exchange of experiences and cultural experiences allows the alliance between people and territories. Pusol Acoge emphasizes the encounter and synergy between cultures, the creation of identity links between the local population and the migrant community residing in Elche. “What I have seen in Puçol: the rooms, the kitchen and the work, it is like my country. There is no difference” (Hakina Ez Zahhari, user of Elche Acoge -Morocco-). Cultural-educational program of Pusol Acoge Each month a thematic activity (workshop or visit) has been scheduled on a particular aspect of local culture, aimed at the different users of Elche Acoge: adults, mostly women from the Maghreb, and minors. Efforts have been made to encourage committed learning and promote the proactive participation of migrant citizens. Activities: - Presentation of the project and the agents that develop it. - Visit to the Puçol School Museum and its immediate surroundings. - Local handicrafts: white palm and esparto braiding, chair stringing. - Gymkhana of traditional games. - Visit to the Natural Park of El Hondo. - Exchange of culinary recipes. - Visit to the most emblematic places of the urban center of Elche. - Traditional music and entertainment workshop. - Exchange of experiences on clothing and body care.
