The field of Elche drawn. Traveler Notebooks

From December 16, 2021 to March 13, 2022 Traveling Notebooks was born eleven years ago with the vocation of "showing the world drawing by drawing" following the philosophy of Urban Sketchers. Logically, our main source of motivation has been, and is, our city, our daily environment, where we have dedicated more time and work, with sporadic incursions to some of the best known places in the Elche countryside. In 2019, we dedicated a thematic cycle in which, over nine months, we drew the content of the Puçol School Museum, which crystallized in an exhibition of the works inaugurated in this same place in September of that year and ended with the publication of the book, Past Drawn-Traveller Notebooks in Puçol, sponsored by the Puçol Project. Then the need to devote attention to the districts of Elche, places where much of the material stored by said institution has come from, became evident, but we had to put the idea on hold in the face of the situation created by Covid-19. The appearance at the end of 2020 of the book Elx Dibuixat amb la mirada de Cuadernos Viajeros, published by Aviva-Elx in collaboration with the Department of Education and Visit-Elche, decided us to start the Pedanías project. When we distributed the publication, fellow notebook maker Mercedes exclaimed: “The games are missing here!” and that was the fuse so that, in January 2021, with all the limitations imposed by the coronavirus, we began our excursions through the rural environment of Elche with a fairly ambitious project to obtain greater knowledge of its landscapes and people, of its essence of struggle and work, trying to put aside the vision that the urbanite has of the "countryside" as a place of chalets (before, faenetes) and leisure. The Covid-19 has not decreased its activity at the expected rate and the lethal presence of the pandemic continues to cling to our lives, which has prevented us from fully achieving the goals initially set to carry out this project, the idea of which we exposed Rafael Martínez, director of the Puçol Project, from the beginning, offering the result that would be obtained from this work to carry out an exhibition that has now materialized. It seems that the travelogue requires us to think of distant and exotic new worlds with wild jungles, strange languages and unsuspected beings and landscapes, but there are other worlds that do not require long and risky journeys, that are not so exotic and are within reach , and in this case we are talking about our countryside, the districts of the Elche countryside. With this work that is presented at the Puçol School Museum, to whom we are immensely grateful, we have felt like discoverers of a land that is as close as it is ignored. Text by Ramón Sempere, coordinator of Cuadernos Viajeros.
